l have a vortec in my 2002 Blazer and my friend says they are really good engines. What makes them so good? Its a V-6

What is the GM vortec engine and why is it good/better than other engines

yea vortec engines kick ass and the only thing i have ever seen go is the water pump. my father has a chevy express 3500 van with a 7.4L vortec (i think) and the only problem he has had with it was the water pump went at about 90 or 100 thousand miles and now he has over 125,000 could use a tune up but it still runs great. it is a fantastic engine.

Vortec is GM is name for their engines that use Port Fuel Injection. Before Vortec was introduced in 1996, GM Trucks used Throttle Body Injection or TBI for fuel delivery. It was basically taking the idea of a Carburetor & adding fuel injectors at the top where the air mixed, so that it was more controllable. This helped to prevent things like vapor lock. However, in 1996 the injectors were moved from the air intake area to directly in the cylinder, GM called it Vortec. There r two versions of Vortec, Sequential Port Fuel Injection & Multi-Port Fuel Injection. The latter is what is used in todays applications. Vortec & other fuel injected engines allow for total computer control of fuel mixture & therefore increase power & theoretically efficiency of an engine. Though from my personal experience I've found that earlier Vortecs engines 1996-1998 were good for power, but slightly worse for mileage compared with TBI.

You only see Vortec engines in GM trucks, they still based on the Chevy Small Block Overhead Valve or Pushrod engine & r known for their durability.

Other manufacturers also name their engines for instance Ford Pickups r typically powered by either a Triton V-8 or a Power Stroke V-8. And Chevy also calls their Diesel engines Duramax.

So there u have it, Vortec is just GM is name for either Sequential Port Fuel Injection or Multi-Port Fuel Injection. The idea with the name Vortec is that GM is system creates a mini twister that supposedly mixes the gas & air better, now I am not sure if it actually does this, but it sure does sound good.

The Vortc design refers to the complete motor but in all reality the cylinder heads r what makes them tick. The shape of the combustion chamber promotes great fuel / air complete burning. There r now two different small block Vortec cylinder heads. Pt.# 25534421 has 185cc intake runners & 77cc exhaust ports. Pt.# 25534446 has 225 cc intake runners & 77cc exhaust ports.

In ur case Chevrolet makes a couple of 18 degree aluminum cylinder heads for competition purposes for ur V6 motor.

HAVING HAD 3 OF THEM, I CAN TELL YOU SHORT OF THE WATER PUMPS --THEY ARE GREAT MOTORS. THEY WILL GO OVER 200,000 ON AVERAGE. THE VORTEC--BE IT A TRADE NAME-- IS A STEP ABOVE THE OLD STYLE SMALL BLOCKS FOR AIRFLOW AND RELIABILITY. THEY DO A BETTER JOB BURNIG FUEL MORE COMPLETE AND THE HEAD RUNNES ARE A BETTER SHAPE ALONG WITH INTAKE RUNNERS BEING MORE FITTED FOR THE USE THEY WERE DESIGNED FOR . YOU HAVE A V6 AND IS VERTUALLY THE SAME AS A 350 SHORT A COUPLE OF CYLINDERS . SAME BORE SAME CRANK BUT SHORTER. A VERY GOOD MOTOR AND THEY CAN BE MADE TO RUN VERY WELL WITH THE RIGHT MODS.

Vortec is just GM is brand name for their truck engines. Ford uses Triton. Chrysler uses Magnum and Hemi. Nissan uses Endurance.

The 4.3 V6 is an excellent engine. Its well designed even if its not the most powerful thing around anymore. They make a lot of low end torque, get good mileage, and are very reliable. Its basically an old 350 with 2 cylinders cut off.
